Autopsy completed after Ohio man beaten last year by 'bored' teens dies

An Ohio man who was badly beaten by six teens last year has died, and officials have ordered an autopsy to determine whether his death was due to the attack.

Pat Mahaney, 46, died Friday in the University of Cincinnati Medical Center, a spokeswoman told the Columbus Dispatch. Six teenagers — all 13 or 14 — injured Mahaney in August and told police they beat him because they were bored and wanted something to do.

A spokeswoman for the Hamilton County prosecutor’s office said Hamilton County Prosecutor Joseph Deters has asked the coroner for an autopsy.

An autopsy has been completed but results will be unclear until further testing, which could take several weeks, a spokesman from the Hamilton County Coroner’s Office told FoxNews.com early Monday. No additional information was available.

Three of the teenagers have pleaded guilty to felonious assault. A spokeswoman would not elaborate on whether Deters will seek additional charges against the teens. Spokeswoman Julie Wilson said the Hamilton County’s prosecutor’s office will describe its “next steps, if any,” after the coroner issues a report, the Dispatch reports.

Rob Portman Reverses Gay Marriage Stance After Son Comes Out

By The Huffington Post News Editors

Sen. Rob Portman (R-Ohio) has reversed his stance on same-sex marriage two years after learning that his son is gay, several Ohio news outlets, including the Columbus Dispatch and the Cleveland Plain Dealer, reported Friday.

In an interview with Ohio reporters in his Senate office, Portman said that his son, Will, came out to the senator and his wife in February 2011.

“It allowed me to think of this issue from a new perspective, and that’s of a Dad who loves his son a lot and wants him to have the same opportunities that his brother and sister would have — to have a relationship like Jane and I have had for over 26 years,” Portman said.

Ohio county sends 'guilt letters' to deter litterbugs

Carly Cornell, a payroll administrator in Worthington, Ohio, doesn’t know who spotted her, but someone caught her commit a relatively unremarkable but perhaps annoying offense: flicking a cigarette butt from her car out onto the street, The Columbus Dispatch reported.

On Feb. 4, Cornell, who freely admits she’s likely guilty, received a ‘guilt letter’ from the Franklin County Environmental Crimes Unit that came with a little note and a small plastic bag as a reminder to protect the environment, she told the paper.

Cornell told the paper that since the letter, she’s scared to toss away her butts, because she never knows “who is watching.”

Cornell’s case is a small example but the county hopes the outcome could help combat a litter problem. The Columbus Dispatch‘s report says county officials hope these ‘guilt letters’ can be a tool in having the potential litterbug think twice about discarding their Starbucks coffee cup on the side of the road.

“Basically, what it is … it’s education,” Deputy Sheriff Richard Thompson, whose name appears at the bottom of the ‘guilt letters,’ told the paper . “It’s saying, ‘If you are doing this, please stop.'”

Last year, the hot line received 2,129 calls and were able to send out 632 letters, the report said. Otherwise, offenders can face a $500 fine or up to 60 days in jail, the report said.
