NASA Moon Missions: Astronauts Won’t Return To Lunar Surface Anytime Soon, Agency Chief Says

NASA chief Charles Bolden says the space agency won’t be sending astronauts to land on the moon any time soon, according to press reports.

The U.S. space agency won’t lead the way back to the moon in the foreseeable future in order to maintain its focus on manned missions to an asteroid, and eventually Mars, Bolden said during a joint meeting of the Space Studies Board and the Aeronautics and Space Engineering Board last Thursday (April 4), according to a SpacePolitics.com report by Jeff Foust.

NASA will not take the lead on a human lunar mission,” Foust quoted Bolden as saying. “NASA is not going to the moon with a human as a primary project probably in my lifetime. And the reason is, we can only do so many things.”

Instead, he said the focus would remain on human missions to asteroids and to Mars. “We intend to do that, and we think it can be done,” Bolden said. [Most Amazing Moon Missions in History]

Bolden’s comments on new manned moon missions came in response to a suggestion that the scientific community, as a whole, is not enthusiastic about pushing ahead with a manned mission to an asteroid by 2025 — an idea endorsed by President Barack Obama in 2010.

In April 2010, Obama called on NASA to pursue the manned asteroid mission as a precursor to sending astronauts to Mars in the mid-2030s. That new space vision, unveiled just after Obama canceled NASA‘s moon-oriented Constellation program, which sought to send astronauts on new lunar landing missions, in favor of the asteroid and Mars plan.

During the April 4 meeting, Bolden apparently made it clear that NASA does not plan to lead the charge back to the moon’s surface.

“I don’t know how to say it any more plainly,” Bolden said, according to Foust. “NASA does not have a human lunar mission in its portfolio and we are not planning for one.”

With Obama now in his second term, Bolden also warned that if the next presidential administration chooses to make another major course change in NASA‘s human spaceflight program, such a change would mean “we are probably, in our lifetime, in the lifetime of everybody sitting in this room, we are probably never again going to see Americans on the moon, on Mars, near an asteroid, or anywhere. We cannot continue to change the course of human exploration.”

NASA made history on July 20, 1969 when Apollo 11 astronauts Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin became the first humans ever to walk to on the moon. Five more successful moon landings would follow until 1972, when the series ended with NASA‘s Apollo 17 mission.

Since then, NASA has launched many unmanned missions to the moon, including the prolific Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter, which has actually photographed the Apollo moon landing sites …read more

PASADENA, Calif. — A team of students has come up with an ambitious plan to send astronauts to a Martian moon, winning a Caltech space exploration contest in the process.

Team Voyager won the Caltech Space Challenge Friday (March 29), edging out Team Explorer in a hard-fought contest. Both 16-person teams devised manned missions to the tiny Mars moon Phobos, contributing ideas to help humanity push farther out into the solar system than it’s ever gone before.

“Both teams performed exceptionally well,” said Jakob van Zyl, a senior executive at NASA‘s Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) in Pasadena, Calif., and a Space Challenge judge. “Their enthusiasm was a pleasure to observe.”

A total of 32 graduate and undergraduate students representing 21 universities and 11 different countries participated in the 2013 Caltech Space Challenge, which ran from March 25 through March 29 at the university’s campus in Pasadena. [The Boldest Mars Missions in History]

Scientists and engineers from Caltech, JPL and a number of aerospace firms advised the two student teams and judged their final mission plans.

Some big names in the history of space exploration also helped inspire the students. For example, Buzz Aldrin — the second person to set foot on the moon —  gave a lecture on the complexities of traveling from Earth to Mars and back via the Red Planet‘s two minuscule moons, Phobosand Deimos.

“These young people are driven by a sense of exploration, and these missions have been designed using the right place… Phobos,” said Aldrin, as he watched the exploration plans take shape. He was also impressed by their choice of using primarily commercial launch systems, such as SpaceX’s Falcon 9 rocket.

“The number one requirement for space right now is to recover the investment we have already made,” Aldrin said.

Flying to a Martian moon

Teams Explorer and Voyager were instructed to figure out a way to send three or four astronauts to a Martian moon, departing in 2032. Once there, the explorers would conduct up to eight extravehicular forays and then return to Earth with geological samples. [Giant Leaps: Top Milestones of Human Spaceflight]

The two teams worked in isolation from each other and with little sleep or exposure to sunshine.

“The last few days were really exhausting,” said participant Andrew Dahir, who hails from Australia. “But our spirits were high the whole time, and we came together as a team to explore the engineering aspects of this mission and to really focus on the details.”

Each team carefully considered the same problems that NASA and other space agencies have been working on for decades. These include moving large masses of equipment and fuel into Earth orbit; providing life support and consumables for astronauts during the long voyage to Mars; the prevention of muscle and …read more

UFO Discovered In Apollo 14 NASA Moon Photo, March 2013.

By ScottCWaring

Date of discovery: March 8, 2013
Location of discovery: Earths Moon

Check out this unusual looking UFO as it hangs over the moons surface while the Apollo 14 craft was orbiting the moon. Not all photos of UFOs were edited out of NASA archives. Actually there are quite a few out there but it does take some time and effort to look for them. Remember that astronaut Buzz Aldrin saw glowing spheres on the other side of the crater that he stood at and he also has publicly stated on TV news that he has seen UFOs while in space. There are two links below that show this photo. One is official NASA, but its low resolution…and the other is hi-res but a site where someone just posted the photo on their website to store it for the future…and luck for us he did. SCW

Egypt protest group signs Morsi up to go to space

An Egyptian opposition group is using a novel way to protest against President Mohammed Morsi: Sign him up for a chance to win a trip to space.

The April 6 Youth Movement said on its official Facebook page on Thursday that it had entered the Islamist leader’s name in the online contest because it wanted to be rid of him. It called on supporters to vote for the president so he’d have a chance to win the trip into space.

There was no immediate response from the president’s press office to an email seeking comment.

“For sure, no one in the universe can put up with blatant lies, reneging on promises except for the brotherly people of the moon,” the group wrote on its post.

“It is for this reason that the president needs your votes. President Morsi, we wish you safe travels.”

April 6 was a driving force behind the 2011 uprising that toppled Hosni Mubarak‘s regime. Many of its supporters backed Morsi in the June 2012 election he narrowly won to become Egypt‘s first freely elected president.

But later, the group became among the fiercest critics of the president and his Muslim Brotherhood, the fundamentalist group from which he hails. The opposition accuses Morsi of monopolizing power and going back on campaign promises to have an inclusive government and introduce far reaching reforms.

Morsi’s supporters say the new government cannot immediately fix years of neglect and poor administration from Mubarak’s 29-year rule.

The group also posted a collage of Morsi, who is a U.S.-trained engineer, in a white space suit.

“I want to go to space because I completed my mission,” April 6 mockingly quoted Morsi as saying below his image.

The contest is being run by Axe, a brand of men’s grooming products. It promises to send 22 people to the edge of space and back aboard a private spaceship. For the competition, Axe teamed up with U.S. astronaut Buzz Aldrin, the second man to walk on the moon during NASA’s Apollo 11 mission in 1969.

Contestants sign up and then get their friends to vote for them. Those with the most votes move …read more

Waste dump at the end of the world

On their mission to the moon in 1969 the Americans Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin created arguably the most famous footprints ever. Since the time the astronauts of the Apollo 11 Mission stepped onto the surface of our satellite their footprints remain almost unchanged. And as no breath of wind will ever be able to blow them away they will be visible forever. …read more

Edgar US Astronaut Mitchell UFO and Aliens are Real and Watching Us.

By ScottCWaring

Edgar Mitchell is a famous NASA astronaut that has walked on the moon. He says he has proof that the greys are real and that right now aliens are watching us. Did you know he holds the world record for the longest moon walk of 9 hours and 7 minutes, yet back then NASA spacesuits only had 7 hours with a 30 minute back up of air, so…where was he for that 1 hour and 37 minutes? Did you know NASA chose him because Ed is deeply sensitive in the ESP area so much so he opened an institute for learning more about it? Many aliens are suppose to communicate with thought, so sending Ed would be the logical alternative if you wished to send a representative of Earth. So with great Americans like Astronaut Ed Mitchell, Buzz Aldrin, US Pres Jimmy Carter, US Pres Ronald Reagan saying they have seen UFOs some several times, then how can the public say they are wrong and why does the public continue to follow the skeptics belief that these American heroes are lying? Don’t be a sheep, be a wolf. SCW
