Yoenis Cespedes and Bryce Harper electrified the sold out crowd at Citi Field on Monday evening with prolific displays of power throughout the 2013 Chevrolet Home Run Derby. In total, the eight participants hit a combined 103 home runs that traveled 41,753 feet (7.91 miles) while raising $529,000 for the Boys & Girls Clubs of America and Major League Baseball’s Reviving Baseball in Inner Cities (RBI) program. However, the big winner of the evening was Joshua Witherspoon from Jackie Robinson-Jersey City RBI. WASHINGTON — Washington Nationals left fielder Bryce Harper is the youngest major leaguer to homer twice in his team’s opening game of a season, delivering solo shots in his first two at-bats Monday.
The reigning NL Rookie of the Year, who is 20, drove a pitch from Miami Marlins right-hander Ricky Nolasco over the out-of-town scoreboard in right-center in the first inning. Harper’s second homer sailed a little to the right of that in the fourth inning.
