Malian newspaper editor released on bail

The editor of a Malian newspaper has been released on bail, after spending more than three weeks in jail following the publication of a letter critical of the coup leader’s salary.

The Committee to Protect Journalists said in a statement that Boukary Daou, editor-in-chief of The Republican newspaper, was allowed to leave the capital’s central prison Tuesday afternoon. He was imprisoned 27 days ago, after his newspaper published an open letter from an army captain, who called on his fellow soldiers to mutiny if coup leader Capt. Amadou Haya Sanogo‘s $8,000-a-month salary is not reduced.

Sanogo led the March 2012 coup which plunged Mali into chaos. Al-Qaida’s local affiliate took advantage of the power vacuum to seize more than half of Mali‘s territory.

Mali newspaper editor charged with crime

A media rights group says that a Malian newspaper editor, who was arrested two weeks ago after publishing a letter criticizing the salary of the nation’s coup leader, has been charged with “inciting disobedience” and “publishing falsehoods.”

Reporters Without Borders said that Boukary Daou, the editor-in-chief of The Republican newspaper, was charged Monday. He was transferred to the central prison in Bamako. Daou was arrested on March 6 after his newspaper published a letter signed by an army captain criticizing Capt. Amadou Haya Sanogo‘s more than $8,000-a-month salary, a lofty sum in the poor country.

The captain said soldiers under his command will abandon the battlefield if Sanogo’s salary is not reduced.

Sanogo led a coup a year ago, overturning two decades of democracy and plunging Mali into crisis.

US raises concerns over Mali's arrest of editor

The United States ambassador to Mali says she has concerns about press freedom in the West African nation after authorities arrested a newspaper editor.

Ambassador Mary Beth Leonard told journalists on a telephone conference call Thursday that she and the U.S. had “great concern” about the arrest of Boukary Daou, the editor-in-chief of The Republican newspaper. Leonard said: “There’s a vital role for media and we urge the utmost protection of free expression and rights under the law.”

Daou was detained by agents from Mali‘s intelligence service on March 6. His arrest came soon after his newspaper published a letter from an army officer denouncing coup leader Capt. Amadou Haya Sanogo‘s recently-decreed salary of $8,000 per month, a very high salary in the impoverished country.

Mali media outlets go silent over editor's arrest

The airwaves in Mali‘s capital were silent on Tuesday and newspapers did not print a morning edition in protest over the arrest last week of the editor-in-chief of The Republican newspaper.

Boukary Daou‘s newspaper published an open letter from an army officer, denouncing the astronomical salary of coup leader, Capt. Amadou Haya Sanogo. A decree published recently states that Sanogo is receiving a monthly salary equivalent to $8,000. After seizing power in a coup a year ago, Sanogo was forced to relinquish power, but he succeeded in negotiating a golden parachute for himself, including the salary of an ex-head of state.

In a statement, Mali‘s press association said that the “The No Press Day will start on Tuesday, March 12, 2013 and will continue until the liberation of Boukary Daou.”
