Hank Aaron’s Atlanta Home Burglarized

ATLANTA — Atlanta police are investigating the burglary of baseball great Hank Aaron’s Atlanta home while he and his wife were away.

A police report obtained by the Atlanta Journal-Constitution (http://bit.ly/1dKoZeG) says the 79-year-old Aaron missed a call from his alarm company Sunday night and asked a neighbor to check on his house Monday morning. The neighbor saw a broken window and called police, and officers arrived to find two BMWs missing from the garage and closets that had been ransacked.

Georgia teen dies after being struck by a police car

A 14-year-old Georgia boy died Sunday after he was struck by a police patrol car while riding his bicycle.

Chandler Jacob Weems of McDonough, Ga. died Sunday morning at an Atlanta hospital after being struck on his bicycle Saturday afternoon as he was exiting a driveway.

MyFoxAtlanta.com reports Chandler was riding from one friend’s house to another with a group of teens when he was struck.

Henry County police Sgt. Joey Smith told the Atlanta Journal-Constitution the officer “could not avoid the accident,” which happened as he was going on duty. Smith says the officer, identified as Denise Allyson Romano, was “very distraught” after the accident.

The accident is being investigated by the Georgia State Patrol. The accident occurred at about 12:30 p.m. Saturday.

Chuck Sims, Georgia Lawmaker Who Supported Welfare Drug Testing, Charged With DUI

A Georgia state lawmaker who supported legislation to drug test welfare recipients was arrested last week, suspected of driving under the influence, Raw Story reports.

Georgia state House Rep. Chuck Sims (R-Ambrose) was pulled over in Coffee County, Ga., on April 2 after being spotted driving erratically by a police officer, the Douglas Enterprise reported. Sims also was cited for DUI in 2010; that DUI charge was later dismissed and he pleaded guilty to reckless driving, according to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution.

“Just as I do not intend to seek any special treatment, I hope that I am not unfairly pre-judged based on rumor and speculation,” Sims said in a statement after being released on bond, the AJC reported. “I am confident that as facts of this situation are revealed, the interests of justice will be served.”

King estate: Memorial group can't use MLK's name

The family of Martin Luther King Jr. has refused to allow the organization that led the effort to build his monument on the National Mall to continue using his name.

The Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial Foundation is now called The Memorial Foundation after paying $2.7 million to King’s children to use his likeness and quotes for the sculpture.

Tricia Harris, former manager of the organization that ran the Martin Luther King Jr. estate, tells the Atlanta Journal-Constitution (http://bit.ly/10RQIqF ) the terms of the relationship between the foundation and King’s children were not expected to extend beyond the group building the memorial.

A representative for Martin Luther King III says he will not comment because it is a legal matter and Bernice King was unavailable for comment.
