News that Snoop Dogg had taken a smoker’s sabbatical from West Coast party rap was met with a healthy skepticism, bemusement and even derision when it first started making its way around the web last summer. But now, Snoop has settled into his newest incarnation: Snoop Lion, a peace-loving, violence-hating reggae artist who claims to be a descendent of Bob Marley.
His transformation was the subject of “Reincarnated,” a VICE documentary that traced the 41-year-old rapper’s trip to Jamaica and subsequent cultural baptism. The film offers a fresh look at Snoop, best known for hits like “Ain’t No Fun” and “Drop It Like It’s Hot,” and makes up what it may lack in cohesion with tender glimpses at a man who appears to be pondering his place in the world.
The result of said introspection is a reggae album produced by Major Lazer and also titled “Reincarnated.” The record features songs like “No Guns Allowed,” on which Snoop teams with his daughter Cori B. and Drake for an anti-arms statement that the Snoop of 15 years ago would have bristled at.

Last week, VICE brought us a rather perturbing story of one man’s self-designed diet that, he says, allows him to give up food (in the conventional sense) forever.
Rob Rhinehartl, a 24-year-old software engineer from Atlanta, told the publication he developed the diet because he’d become fed up with the inefficiency of eating regular meals. His diet now largely consists of a beige-colored slop he calls Soylent, which is filled with supposedly essential vitamins, minerals and other nutrients. Don’t worry, though; it’s not made of people. He explains:
Not having to worry about food is fantastic. No groceries or dishes, no deciding what to eat, no endless conversations weighing the relative merits of gluten-free, keto, paleo, or vegan. Power and water bills are lower. I save hours a day and hundreds of dollars a month. I feel liberated from a crushing amount of repetitive drudgery. Soylent might also be good for people having trouble managing their weight. I find it very easy to lose and gain precise amounts of weight by varying the proportions in my drink.
Flamboyant former NBA star Dennis Rodman is heading to North Korea — tattoos, piercings, bad-boy reputation and all.
The American known as “the worm” is set to arrive Tuesday in Pyongyang, becoming an unlikely ambassador at a time of heightened tensions between the U.S. and North Korea.
Rodman, three members of the Harlem Globetrotters basketball team and a camera crew from VICE television are visiting North Korea for a news show set to air on HBO in April.
The trip comes two weeks after North Korea conducted an underground nuclear test in defiance of U.N. bans against atomic activity. Pyongyang says the test was directed at Washington.
VICE told The Associated Press that the Americans hope to engage in a little “basketball diplomacy” with North Koreans.
