Saudi sergeant child rape case going to trial

A Saudi Arabia air force sergeant accused of abducting and raping a 13-year-old boy on New Year’s Eve is heading for trial in Nevada.

Mazen Alotaibi (MAH’-zen ah-loh-TAH‘-bee) gave up his right Thursday to an evidence hearing in the case.

That meant the boy didn’t have to testify.

Defense attorney Don Chairez (shar-EHZ‘) says there’s still evidence to collect and he’s trying to negotiate a resolution that avoids trial.

Prosecutors added two new lewdness charges to kidnapping, sexual assault with a minor, and other counts against the 23-year-old aircraft mechanic.

Las Vegas Justice of the Peace Bill Kephart increased bail to $1.72 million.

Alotaibi could face life in prison if he’s convicted.

Chairez says his client will plead not guilty at arraignment Feb. 6.

Bail $1.22M for Saudi sergeant in Vegas rape case

A judge set bail at $1.22 million for a 23-year-old Saudi Arabia air force sergeant jailed on New Year’s Eve after he was accused of raping a 13-year-old boy in a Las Vegas Strip hotel room.

Defense attorney Don Chairez (shar-EHZ‘) says he believes police unfairly questioned Mazen Alotaibi (MAH’-zen ah-loh-TAH‘-bee) while he was drunk after the alleged Dec. 31 attack at the Circus Circus hotel.

Alotaibi said nothing in court. Chairez says he’ll plead not guilty.

Chairez says he’ll recommend Alotaibi remain in jail until an evidence hearing Jan. 31.

Prosecutors added two lewdness with a minor charges to kidnapping, sexual assault, felony coercion and burglary counts that could get Alotaibi decades in state prison.

Alotaibi has been stationed at U.S. air bases in Texas and Mississippi.

Lawyer to seek release of Saudi air force sergeant

A defense attorney says he’ll seek the release from jail of a 23-year-old Saudi Arabia air force sergeant facing a child rape charge in Las Vegas.

Mazen Alotaibi (MAH’-zen ah-loh-TAH‘-bee) stood in shackles Thursday and stared at the courtroom floor while a Las Vegas judge delayed an evidence hearing pending a bail hearing Friday.

Defense attorney Don Chairez (shar-EHZ‘) said later that he’ll offer to have Alotaibi turn in his Saudi diplomatic passport if he’s allowed to post bail.

Alotaibi faces kidnapping, sexual assault with a minor and felony coercion charges that could get him decades in prison.

Police allege that Alotaibi pulled a 13-year-old boy into a sixth-floor room at the Circus Circus hotel and sexually assaulted him the morning before Las Vegas‘ big New Year’s Eve celebration.
