The Chinese Carriers (China Mobile, China Unicom and China Telecom) announced their January subscriber numbers last Thursday. While China Mobile has the largest number of 3G and total subscribers it has the lowest penetration rate of 3G phones at 13%. The total share of 3G phones is just 22% with China Telecom having the highest penetration at 44% and China Unicom at 33%. It is not too surprising that China Unicom’s and Telcom’s 3G penetration rate is higher since they are the two carriers that have Apple’s iPhone.
