SC teacher that stomped US flag to resign

A South Carolina high school teacher who talked glowingly about the U.S. and the importance of embracing freedom while stomping on an American flag in his classroom has agreed to resign at the end of this school year.

The attorney for Chapin High School teacher Scott Compton and the Lexington-Richland 5 School District released a joint statement Friday announcing Compton’s decision.

The district’s superintendent recommended that Compton be fired after parents complained about the lesson. But the teacher had been deciding whether to appeal to the school board.

Compton’s lawyer says he stomped the flag to show the idea of what America stands for is greater than the material objects like the flag that represent it and that the teacher did not intend to show any disrespect to military members to the country.

Board weighs firing SC teacher who stomped on flag

A South Carolina high school teacher who talked glowingly about the United States and the importance of embracing freedom while stomping on an American flag in his classroom may soon find out if he loses his job.

Lexington-Richland District 5’s school board is expected to consider the superintendent’s recommendation to fire Scott Compton at a closed door meeting Monday evening.

A spokesman for the district says Superintendent Stephen Hefner was appalled with the bad judgment in defacing a U.S. flag to make a point.

Compton and his lawyer did not respond to messages from The Associated Press.

But attorney Darryl Small told WIS-TV that Compton meant no intentional disrespect and was only trying to show that what America stands for is greater than the material objects like the flag.

Lesson flap: Teacher accused of stomping on flag

An English teacher at a South Carolina high school is facing disciplinary action after officials say he stomped on an American flag in front of his students in a bid to spur discussion.

Authorities say Scott Compton is accused of taking an American flag down from the wall and stamping on it during three of his classes last month at Chapin High School as part of a lesson.

Attorney Darryl Smalls said Compton, who is on paid leave, was trying to generate discussion by using a powerful symbol his students were familiar with.

A local school superintendent has recommended that Compton be fired. The matter goes before a school board Monday.

Compton, an honors English teacher, has taught at the high school for seven years.
