Calif. woman convicted in boiling water attack

A Northern California woman is facing 16 years to life behind bars after being convicted of killing her ex-husband by dousing him with scalding water.

San Mateo County prosecutors say 41-year-old Jesusa Ursonal Tatad pleaded no contest to second-degree murder on Wednesday. She is scheduled to be sentenced May 17.

Tatad and her ex-husband, 36-year-old Ronnie Tatad, shared a Daly City apartment. Prosecutors say she pulled back the blankets while he slept on Nov. 26, 2011, and threw a pot of boiling water on him.

They say she was upset because she believed he was seeing another woman.

The San Mateo County Times reports (http://bit.ly/ZAlm2T ) that Ronnie Tatad died about two weeks later of a blood infection connected to his burns.

Calif. man sentenced in baptism party brawl

A California man was sentenced to nearly a year in jail for stabbing a partygoer who tried to dance with his wife at a baptism celebration.

Yasmani Ramirez, 28, of Redwood City pleaded no contest and was ordered to pay about $1,000 in restitution, the San Francisco Chronicle reported (http://bit.ly/X2GM9l ) Tuesday.

Ramirez was at a baptism party in November when another man touched Ramirez’s wife on her back and asked her to dance. Ramirez argued with the man and several others, which escalated into a fight.

Ramirez pulled out a knife and stabbed the man once in the stomach and cut him several times on his arms when the victim tried to shield his face, authorities said.

“These are relatively young people — testosterone is still running rampant in them,” said San Mateo County prosecutor Steve Wagstaffe. “It turned into a couple of wild male elk in mating season locking horns — except for one party, the horns were a knife.”

Authorities have placed a hold on Ramirez, an illegal immigrant, and they could start deportation proceedings when he is released.

Ruben Barrales Hired By Republican Pac, GROW Elect, In Effort To Elect More Latinos

By The Huffington Post News Editors

A political action committee formed to help elect Latino Republicans to office in California has hired Ruben Barrales, a former White House aide and San Mateo County supervisor, to be its president and chief executive officer.

The group, GROW Elect, said in a prepared statement that Barrales’ appointment “is part of an aggressive expansion” of its effort to elect Latino Republicans to local, state and federal offices.

The group last year involved itself mostly in local races and was a relatively small operation, spending less than $150,000. It was funded largely by Charles Munger Jr., a wealthy Republican activist.
