Ex-Marine gets 20 years in Ohio mosque fire

A former Marine from Indiana has been sentenced to 20 years in prison after admitting he started a fire inside an Ohio mosque because he wanted revenge for the killings of American soldiers overseas.

A federal judge in Toledo also ordered Randy Linn, of St. Joe, Ind., to pay $1.4 million for the damage to the mosque.

The 52-year-old Linn apologized in court Tuesday and said he was drinking heavily before he drove to Ohio and set fire to The Islamic Center of Greater Toledo last fall.

The fire caused extensive smoke and water damage throughout the building.

Linn pleaded guilty to hate crime and other charges late last year but then tried to take back his plea. A judge turned down that request just weeks ago.

Indiana man faces sentencing in Ohio mosque fire

A former Marine from Indiana is set to be sentenced after admitting he started a fire inside a mosque in Ohio because he wanted revenge for the killings of American soldiers overseas.

A deal between federal prosecutors and Randy Linn of St. Joe, Ind., calls for him to receive a 20-year sentence at a hearing scheduled Tuesday afternoon in Toledo.

A U.S. District Court judge turned down Linn’s attempt last month to withdraw his guilty plea.

His attorney wanted the judge to throw out the plea so the 52-year-old Linn could undergo a competency exam.

Linn said in court that he set the fire at The Islamic Center of Greater Toledo last fall after seeing images of wounded soldiers in the news.

The fire caused extensive damage at the mosque.

Judge: Man can't withdraw plea in Ohio mosque fire

A federal judge isn’t allowing a former Marine to withdraw his guilty plea to starting a fire at a mosque in Ohio.

The judge in Toledo rejected the request by Randy Linn, of St. Joe, Ind. on Thursday.

Linn says he was in an emotional state when he pleaded guilty to hate crime charges. His attorney asked the judge to throw out the plea so the 52-year-old Linn could undergo a competency exam.

Prosecutors opposed the request, saying Linn made it clear he knew what he was doing.

APNewsBreak: Man asks to nix OH mosque fire plea

An Indiana man who said he set an Ohio mosque on fire to avenge American soldiers now wants to withdraw his guilty plea.

Randy Linn, of St. Joe, Ind., asked to change his plea Tuesday, saying he made a mistake pleading guilty to hate crime charges.

In a new court filing Linn says he was in an emotional state and depressed when he entered a guilty plea last month. At that hearing the truck driver told a federal judge he thought most Muslims are terrorists.

Prosecutors say Linn was armed when he broke into the Toledo-area mosque, poured gasoline on a prayer rug and lit it on fire.

A deal with prosecutors had called for Linn to be sentenced to 20 years in prison.
