Defining a Microeconomic Strategy for Global Competitiveness

By Rebecca O. Bagley, Contributor For most of the 20th Century, Northeast Ohio’s economy was supported by its material sciences, engineering, transportation infrastructure, and steel and auto manufacturing sectors. But, like other regions across the country, it saw these competitive advantages disappear under the pressures of global competition. Northeast Ohio lost tens of thousands of manufacturing jobs in the steel and tire industries in the 1970s and 80s, and Cleveland became a poster child for post-industrial challenges.

  • Three Rivers Midstream to Serve Shell, Other Producers in Wet-Gas Area of Marcellus, Utica Shale
  • Would Support Development of the Petrochemical Market in the Northeast
  • New Venture Has Long-Term Fee-Based Dedicated Gathering, Processing Agreement for Shell’s Production in Area; Plans to Build Large-Scale Gas Processing Complex
  • New Processing Facility Would Have Access to NGL Fractionation, NGL Connections to Shell’s Proposed Petrochemical Facility, and the Bluegrass Pipeline JV

TULSA, Okla.–(BUSINESS WIRE)– Williams Partners L.P. (NYS: WPZ) announced today that it has agreed to launch a new midstream joint venture with Shell to provide gas gathering and gas processing services for production located in Northwest Pennsylvania. The venture will invest in both wet-gas handling infrastructure and dry gas infrastructure serving Marcellus and Utica Shale wells in the area.

The new venture, Three Rivers Midstream, has signed a long-term fee-based dedicated gathering and processing agreement for Shell’s production in the area, including approximately 275,000 dedicated acres. The joint venture also plans to pursue gathering and processing agreements with other producers in the liquids-rich areas of Northeast Ohio in addition to Northwest Pennsylvania.

Three Rivers plans to construct a 200 million cubic feet per day (MMcf/d) cryogenic gas processing plant and related facilities. The location will be determined at a later date. The planned large-scale gas processing complex would be expandable as Three Rivers‘ business grows. The initial plant is expected to be placed into service by second quarter 2015.

“This new joint venture builds on our strategy of creating large-scale infrastructure solutions that will provide Shell and other producers with access to the best markets for their natural gas and natural gas liquids, whether they be in the Northeast or the Gulf Coast,” said Alan Armstrong, chief executive officer of Williams Partners‘ general partner.

Our 2013 Hyundai Veloster Turbo spent the most days in March (and many in February) with me, so I’ll be handling its long-term update report this month. The time of year is important to note, as much of my time spent with the Veloster Turbo was under gray skies dumping inches of snow on Northeast Ohio. So not only were the roads prohibiting much fun from being had behind the wheel, but the constant freeze-thaw cycle of this area left the roads a mine field of uneven pavement, cracked concrete and pot holes.

First, let’s talk about the Veloster Turbo‘s engine. The turbocharged 1.6-liter four-cylinder puts down 201 horsepower and 195 pound-feet of torque… on paper. In the cold climes of Clevelandia, however, it often seemed like the engine was down on power, at least until it ran long enough to have toasty warm internals. As I work from home, however, many of my trips with the Veloster Turbo were short jaunts, errands and drive-bys that didn’t afford the engine much warm-up time. As such, I felt like I never experienced the engine’s full reserve of power, and am eager to see if my colleagues note the warmer weather alters this experience for the better.

No injuries reported after flight skids off runway at Ohio airport

A United Airlines flight skidded off the runway at Hopkins International Airport Friday morning.

The Boeing 737 had already landed and was taxiing at the Ohio airport where icy conditions are being reported.

No injuries have been reported and passengers are waiting to be bussed to the terminal.

“While turning on to the taxiway, the aircraft slid into the grass and snow. There were no reported injuries among the 103 passengers and five crew members. United is working to get the customers off the aircraft and to the terminal,” a United spokeswoman told Celescene.com.

Parts of Northeast Ohio are under a winter advisory where road conditions are reported to be extremely icy.
