Tribal fighting in Darfur leaves 60 dead

Sudan‘s state news agency says 60 people were killed in renewed fighting between two Arab tribes over mining rights in the northern Darfur region.

The United Nations says fighting broke out last month in the Jebel Amir area, leaving 100 dead in January and forcing 70,000 people to flee their homes.

The state news agency said the fighting Saturday was the worst since a cease-fire agreement was reached last month. The agency said fighting began when a group of armed tribesmen in vehicles and riding camels attacked the El-Sireaf area in North Darfur.

Sudan‘s western region of Darfur has been afflicted by violence since 2003, when rebels took up arms against the central government in Khartoum. Fighting between government forces and among tribes breaks out periodically in the area.

UN: More than 100 killed in Darfur tribal conflict

The U.N. and African Union peacekeeping force in Sudan says more than 100 people have been killed and other 70,000 displaced from their homes because of recent tribal warfare in Darfur.

The United Nation-African Union Mission in Darfur says in a report issued Thursday that the deaths and displacement resulted from clashes between the Abbala and Beni Hussein tribes in Jabel Amir, the site of gold mines in North Darfur state in western Sudan.

Darfur has been in turmoil since 2003, when ethnic Africans rebelled, accusing the Arab-dominated Sudanese government of discrimination. Rights groups charge the regime retaliated by unleashing Arab militias on civilians.

The U.N. estimates that 300,000 people have died and 2.7 million have been displaced in the long-running conflict.

Sudan: 4 Chinese abducted in Darfur are released

Sudan‘s official news agency says four Chinese workers abducted last week in the North Darfur region have been released.

SUNA says the four men were handed over on Wednesday to the joint U.N. and African African Union mission in Darfur, or UNAMID. They were kidnapped on Saturday.

The Chinese are employees of the China Railway 18th Bureau Group, which is building a road in North Darfur just outside the regional capital, El-Fasher.
