Notebook: Timberwolves 105, Suns 93

THE FACTS: In a game between two teams whose playoff ambitions ended shortly after the Christmas present were opened, the Minnesota Timberwolves took a nice step toward closing out a frustrating season in a positive manner, defeating the Phoenix Suns 105-93. Minnesota did not shoot as well as Phoenix and, with their starting center, Nikola Pekovic out with a calf contusion, they were outrebounded by Phoenix. But they took care of the ball and forced Phoenix into turnover after turnover. The Suns opened an early lead with an 11-0 first quarter run, but their inability to hold on to the ball allow Minnesota to whittle that lead down. Ricky Rubio led the way for Minnesota, filling up the stat sheet, as he has done of late. He finished with 24 points, 10 assists, five rebounds, and five steals. J.J. Barea came off the bench for Minnesota and scored his points in bunches at key times in the game. Markieff Morris had 20 points on 8-for-11 shooting (3-for-4 from beyond the arc) to go with nine rebounds. But he and his front court partner, Luis Scola together accounted for 12 of Phoenix’s turnovers.

Notebook: Wolves 97, Hornets 95

THE FACTS: The Minnesota Timberwolves were happy to get Nikola Pekovic and Andrei Kirilenko back and thrilled when they stepped up at crunch time and lead Minnesota to a 97-95 victory over the New Orleans Hornets. Pekovic and Kirilenko had been sidelined since the end of February and in the opening three quarters, the rust was evident. Going into the fourth quarter, Pekovic and Kirilenko were a combined -31 in terms of plus/minus. But in the final seconds, they showed the Minnesota fans what they had been missing, Pekovic with a big offensive rebound and a pair a free throws and Kirilenko with a pair of blocked shots. …read more

Notebook: Mavericks 100, Wolves 77

THE FACTS: The Dallas Mavericks made quick and relatively easy work of the tired and depleted Minnesota Timberwolves, defeating them 100-77 on Sunday night. With injuries to key players, including Kevin Love, Nikola Pekovic, and Andrei Kirilenko, Minnesota only had nine players available. And they were not only coming off a back-to-back in Denver, they had to contend with an early start to this game, daylight savings time, and a two-hour wait on the tarmac in Denver waiting for their plane to be de-iced. Minnesota coach Rick Adelman did not get home until 4:30 this morning. …read more

Starting in Love’s absence and playing much better recently, Derrick Williams had 17 points and eight rebounds. Notebook: Spurs 104, Timberwolves 94

THE FACTS: The San Antonio Spurs started their nine-game road trip exactly the way they wanted, defeating the Minnesota Timberwolves 104-94 on Wednesday night. Playing without Tim Duncan (sore left knee) and Manu Ginobli (tight left hamstring), the Spurs got their 11th straight win on the back of big production from Danny Green and Tony Parker. Green made a career-high eight 3-pointers (on 12 attempts) and ended up with 28 points. Parker scored 30 or more for the seventh time this season, finishing with 31 points. Nikola Pekovic led Minnesota with 21 points and 10 rebounds and Ricky Rubio continued to look more like the Rubio of last year, dishing out 11 assists. His shooting touch still needs work, however, as he was an anemic 3-for-13 from the floor. …read more

Notebook: Timberwolves 108, Hawks 103

THE FACTS: Four Timberwolves starters scored in double figures Tuesday night, but it was the fifth starter, Dante Cunningham, who made the critical plays that helped the Minnesota Timberwolves beat the Atlanta Hawks for the first time since 2006, 108-103 in Target Center. Cunningham nailed a 20-foot jumper to give the Wolves, who had lost 11 straight games to Atlanta, a three-point lead with 15.9 seconds to play, then stole the ensuing inbounds pass to kill the Hawks’ hopes of a rally. Nikola Pekovic scored 25 points and added a career-high 18 rebounds to lead the Wolves, who improved to 8-0 when scoring 100 points or more this year, while Andrei Kirilenko added 21 points, six rebounds, and the 2,000th assist of his career. Josh Smith and Lou Williams led Atlanta, which fell behind by 17 in the first half and never quite caught up, with 21 points apiece, while Al Horford added 19 points.
