Cambodia Khmer Rouge tribunal staff goes on strike

A hearing at the U.N.-backed genocide trial of former leaders of the Khmer Rouge has been suspended because local translators have gone on strike following three months without pay.

Khmer Rouge tribunal spokesman Neth Pheaktra says Monday that about 30 Cambodian staff members from the translation section said they will stop working until they get their salaries.

The announcement came as the court was about to hear testimony from a foreign expert on Monday.

The tribunal is seeking justice for the estimated 1.7 million people who died due to the extremist policies of the communist Khmer Rouge‘s 1970s rule.

Cambodian staff members have been working without pay since December. They also face the prospect of not receiving their money this year unless foreign donors contribute more funds.

Cambodia Khmer Rouge tribunal staff going unpaid

About 300 Cambodian staff members at the U.N.-backed genocide trial of former leaders of the Khmer Rouge have been working since December without pay, and face the prospect of not getting paid this year unless foreign aid donors contribute more funds.

Khmer Rouge tribunal spokesman Neth Pheaktra said Friday that $9.3 million is needed for salaries and daily operating costs in 2013 for the Cambodian component of the operation. All functions of the tribunal have Cambodian and international personnel operating in tandem but with separate budgets.

The tribunal is seeking justice for the estimated 1.7 million people who died due to the extremist policies of the communist Khmer Rouge‘s 1970s rule.

The tribunal projects total costs of $230.7 million by its expected conclusion in 2013.

Cambodia Khmer Rouge leader Nuon Chea hospitalized

Ailing former Khmer Rouge leader Nuon Chea has been hospitalized in the Cambodian capital and is being treated for acute bronchitis.

The 86-year-old is one of only three surviving leaders of the radical movement who are facing war crimes charges in a trial by a U.N.-backed court.

Tribunal spokesman Neth Pheaktra says Nuon Chea was hospitalized Sunday.

Pheaktra said Monday that hearings in Nuon Chea‘s case had been postponed.

Nuon Chea was known as Brother No. 2 after Pol Pot, the deceased leader of the extremist group whose fanatical efforts to realize a utopian society during the Khmer Rouge‘s 1975-79 reign led to the death of some 1.7 people from starvation, diseases, overwork and executions.

Nuon Chea is charged with crimes against humanity, genocide, religious persecution, homicide and torture.
