2 men plead not guilty in Chicago teen's death

Two men have pleaded not guilty in the shooting death of a 15-year-old Chicago girl who performed at President Barack Obama‘s inaugural festivities about a week before she died.

Eighteen-year-old Michael Ward and 20-year-old Kenneth Williams pleaded not guilty Thursday to charges including first-degree murder and attempted murder in the killing of Hadiya (hy-DEE‘-uh) Pendleton.

Hadiya died after she was shot Jan. 29 in a park about a mile from Obama‘s home on Chicago’s South Side.

Michelle Obama attended the girl’s funeral and Hadiya’s parents sat next to the first lady during the president’s State of the Union address. President Obama later came to Chicago to address gun violence.

Police say the girl was an innocent victim in a gang-related shooting.

Ward and Williams have been denied bond.

Cops: Honor student killed by Chicago gang members

Chicago police say two men accused of killing a 15-year-old honor student mistook her and her friends for rival gang members who’d shot one of the men over the summer.

Police Superintendent Garry McCarthy says murder charges were filed Monday against 18-year-old Michael Ward and 20-year-old Kenneth Williams.

Both are accused in the Jan. 29 death of Hadiya (hy-DEE‘-uh) Pendleton. She and her friends weren’t affiliated with gangs but were shot at in a park not far from President Barack Obama’s Chicago home. She’d recently performed during his inauguration ceremonies in Washington.

McCarthy says Ward told investigators the shooting was meant as retaliation for Williams being shot in the arm in July.

McCarthy says they were arrested while driving to a strip club Saturday, just hours after Pendleton’s funeral.

2 charged in murder of Chicago teen who performed at inauguration

Authorities say they’ve filed murder charges against two gang members in the death of a 15-year-old honor student who was fatally shot last month near the Chicago home of President Barack Obama.

Chicago police spokeswoman Melissa Stratton said 18-year-old Michael Ward and 20-year-old Kenneth Williams were charged Monday with first-degree murder in connection to the death of Hadiya Pendleton.

Both men also are charged with two counts of attempted murder and aggravated battery with a firearm.

Police say Pendleton was talking with friends in a Chicago park when one suspect ran toward the group, opened fire and then fled in a car.

The Jan. 29 shooting made national headlines because Pendleton had recently returned from Washington, where she’d performed during inauguration festivities with her high school band.
