Mayor Mark Hawke carried the 2012 Division I state girls’ swimming title trophy into the headquarters of the Massachusetts Interscholastic Athletic Association. For a small trophy Hawke derided as a “cheap piece of particle board,” it’s caused a lot of trouble — which is why the mayor, who once said Charlton Heston-style that the MIAA could “pry my cold, dead hands from around it,” was giving it back, as if it were a cursed relic.
