By Blue Carreon, Contributor

According to British Vogue, the Issa dress sold out within hours after the engagement was announced. Since then Kate has been spotted wearing different Issa dresses on several occasions, which has been instrumental in raising the profile of the brand globally. …read more

1 Hidden Threat to Target's Retail Dominance

By Tamara Rutter, The Motley Fool

Filed under:

Discount retailer Target has made a name for itself by collaborating with some of fashion’s most admired designers. However, it hasn’t been easy. Brick-and-mortar chains including Target, Wal-Mart and Best Buy have suffered lately because of increased competition from online retailers, such as Amazon.com . Differentiated merchandise has helped Target set itself apart from competitors — that is, until recently.

Rival retailers are catching on, and a new partnership between Nordstrom and online marketplace Etsy promises to further disrupt the retail space. Etsy is an online platform that lets independent designers sell their homemade, one-of-a-kind goods to global shoppers on the Web. Today, Etsy has evolved to include Etsy Wholesale Marketplace.

A wholesale experience like no other
This is where Nordstrom comes into the mix. The upscale chain has agreed to be an Etsy wholesale buyer in hopes of offering its customers products they otherwise might not be able to find. Here’s how Etsy’s Wholesale Marketplace works: Sellers are vetted by Etsy and later linked with wholesale buyers from the likes of Nordstrom, West Elm, and other, smaller boutiques.

As a result, Nordstrom will have unique products that shoppers can’t get from other department stores or big-box retailers.

Unlikely partnerships, like the national department store chain and Etsy, are a result of increased competition from online retailers. Smartphone apps such as Amazon.com’s Price Check allow consumers to easily comparison-shop online. This is pushing retailers both big and small to find creative ways to get shoppers into their stores.

If you remember, Target launched a designer collection together with Neiman Marcus during the all-important December shopping season. Both Nordstrom and Target have struggled to find an edge in a market forever changed by Amazon. Nevertheless, Nordstrom hopes to reverse this by featuring limited-edition products from Etsy in its stores.

Target blazed a similar trail last year when it launched The Shops at Target. The ongoing design program brings specialty shops from around the country into Target stores to bring consumers affordable, limited-edition collections they can’t find elsewhere.

The Shops at Target brings a boutique twist to the retailer’s ongoing collaborations with world-renowned fashion designers including Diane von Furstenberg, Missoni, and Jason Wu. In the past, Target’s exclusive lines from both Missoni and Jason Wu have sold out online and in stores in a matter of hours. This demonstrates that exclusivity works.

The retail experience is changing
Despite the early success Target gained through these exclusive fashion lines, Best Buy and other struggling retail chains were slow to catch on. To be fair, Best Buy gave the store-within-a-store model a go when it first introduced the mini-Apple stores format at the end of 2011. Sadly, not even Apple could save Best Buy from the battles it would later endure.

What became clear was that brick-and-mortars could no longer get by on low prices or brand recognition alone. The competitive landscape of the retail industry is changing and companies …read more

In Vogue: First Lady to Wear Krakoff, Kors for Magazine's April Issue

By Justin Fenner

Michelle Obama may not have appeared on the March cover of Vogue as initially suspected, but The Washington Post reports the first lady will be on the magazine’s April cover, and she will be wearing Reed Krakoff.

The Posts‘s Reliable Sources blog cites Robin Givhan as saying that Obama will wear one of Krakoff’s ensembles on the cover, though it’s not known if it came from her own wardrobe or if it was on loan for the shoot. (The first lady wore Krakoff at President Obama‘s swearing-in ceremony, and in her official White House portrait, at left.) Photographer Annie Leibovitz reportedly also captured Obama wearing a sweater and ball gown from Michael Kors.

According to The Washingtonian, a camera crew was seen taking equipment into the White House at the end of January to set up the first lady’s second Vogue cover. Leibovitz also shot Obama in Jason Wu for the March 2009 cover of the magazine, and the cover line on that issue hailed her as “the first lady the world’s been waiting for.”

Vogue has featured a number of women in politics – from Secretary of State Hillary Clinton to former First Lady Laura Bush – but none of them has enjoyed being on the cover twice.

Granted, the first lady does have one trump card: President Obama. His public schedule for the day of the shoot was mostly clear, with the exception of a briefing at 10 a.m. Will he be in the picture this time around? Only time will tell.

Jason Wu Fall 2013

By Melissa Liebling-Goldberg

Hot on the heels of dressing Michelle Obama for the Inaugural Ball, Jason Wu sent out an utterly sophisticated Fall 2013 collection that spoke directly to powerful, grown-up women. With a strict color palette of black, white, bright red, and deep violet, Wu went deep into tailoring with outstanding outerwear that included sexy, structured lace trench coats. There was more than a hint of classic YSL in the narrow black pantsuits with stiff white collared blouses that hinted at Le Smoking, while leather-edged black fur boleros nodded ever so to the chubby. The collection was as sophisticated as the crowd at the Park Avenue venue, with perfectly coiffed actress Jaime King perched front row.

Ginnifer and Julianne Sport Shorts Suits – Would You?

By Melody Nazarian

You have your mature pantsuit (the ones you’re allowed to wear to work or as an alternative to a cocktail dress), then you have the more playful version, the shorts suit. This fun bunch gained popularity last Spring when a slew of designers like Jason Wu, Michael Kors, and Tory Burch sent them strutting down the catwalk. Since then, celebrities have borrowed the leg-baring runway trend and brought them to the sidewalk (and red carpet). Among the most recent to rock the look are Ginnifer Goodwin and Julianne Hough. Ginnifer’s cobalt tuxedo-style shorts suit featured chic white piping, while Julianne’s navy suit was brought to life via a jewel-collar blouse and lace-up sandals. It might be too frigid in some places right now to wear a shorts suit sans tights, but it’s the perfect Spring companion for both daytime and nighttime fun. Take a good look at these stunning ladies in their shorts suits, then tell us, would you adopt the trend?

Michelle Obama's Controversial Bangs Rumored to Cover Vogue's March Issue

By Justin Fenner

Karl Lagerfeld declared this week that he’s not a fan of First Lady Michelle Obama‘s much-lauded decision to get bangs, but rumor has it those bangs will appear on the March cover of Vogue.

According to The Washingtonian, a camera crew was seen taking equipment into the White House on Thursday morning. It’s believed the crew was setting up for Annie Leibovitz to photograph the first lady for her second Vogue cover. Leibovitz shot Obama in Jason Wu for the March 2009 cover of the magazine. The cover line on that issue hailed her as “the first lady the world’s been waiting for.”

Vogue has featured a number of women in politics – from Secretary of State Hillary Clinton to former First Lady Laura Bush – but none of them has enjoyed being on the cover twice. The Obama cover rumor will go head to head with another possibility. A leaked photo of Beyoncé that was also reportedly taken by Leibovitz suggests she’s in the running for the March cover, too.

But the first lady does have one trump card: President Obama. His public schedule for Thursday was mostly clear, with the exception of a briefing at 10 a.m. Will he be in the picture this time around? Only time will tell.
