Egypt: Gunmen steal central bank chief's car

Egypt‘s state news agency says three masked gunmen have attacked the car of the central bank governor, killing his bodyguard and stealing the vehicle. The bank chief was not in the car.

MENA says the bodyguard and the driver were on their way to pick up newly-appointed central bank chief Hesham Ramez on Wednesday when the assailants opened fire on the governor’s car, killing the bodyguard and forcing the driver to pull over.

The gunmen then drove off in the car.

The carjacking appeared to be a random criminal act and not an attack against the governor.

Egypt's deputy central bank governor quits

The central bank of Egypt says the government has accepted the resignation of its deputy governor, less than a week after her boss said he’s quitting.

The changes in the central bank come as Egypt faces a spiraling economic crisis two years after the uprising that forced former President Hosni Mubarak to step down.

A new governor, Hesham Ramez, is to take office in February. His predecessor’s resignation was anticipated after nine years in office.

The bank said the Tuesday resignation of Lobna Helal, the first woman to serve as deputy central bank governor, takes effect Jan. 31.

No reason was given for her resignation, a shake-up in banks was expected following Ramez’ nomination.

The head the National Bank of Egypt, the nation’s largest commercial bank, resigned Monday.

Egypt names a new central bank governor

Egypt‘s president has named a new head for the country’s central bank, after the resignation of the longtime chief amid a crippling economic crisis and pound devaluation.

Hesham Ramez will replace Farouq el-Oqdah, who has been the bank’s governor for nine years, according to presidential spokesman Yasser Ali.

Al-Okdah said Thursday he submitted his resignation, in line with the newly passed constitution.

Ramez, who was previously vice chairman for the Commercial International Bank, one of Egypt‘s largest private banks, steps into post at a time when the Egyptian currency has fallen to new lows against the dollar and foreign reserves have shrunk by more than half over the past two years to what the bank says is a “critical minimum level.”
