Austria party fires member over alleged Web posts

Austria‘s rightist FPO party has dismissed the spokesman of its Vienna branch for allegedly posting excerpts from a battle song of Hitler’s elite Waffen-SS units on Facebook.

The party says Stefan Gotschacher has been terminated “with immediate effect” while the FPO investigates media reports that he posted such passages.

Privacy settings on Gotschacher’s Facebook page restricted access. He did not immediately answer a Facebook query on whether the accusation was true.

The weekly Falter quotes Gotschacher as saying he did not know the origin of the passages. But an FPO statement Wednesday said such sentiments “have no place” in the party.

The FPO depicts itself as mainstream, European Union-skeptic and critical of immigration. Polls consistently show it with more than 20 percent support — some from the extreme right.

2 Austrian politicians with Nazi Facebook posts

Austrian legal officials are investigating two members of the rightist FPO party for Facebook postings that reflect pro-Nazi sentiments, with the party announcing that one has resigned after describing German Chancellor Angela Merkel as a “traitor to her fatherland.”

The FPO said Wednesday that Fabian Wetter resigned from the party and as alderman of the Upper Austrian town of Franking.

The other official, Michael Linder, remains the head of the party’s youth section in the Upper Austrian town of Ried. He is being investigated for postings showing him in a T-shirt with the logo of a neo-Nazi heavy metal group and a citation from a poem popular with the Hitler Youth.

Wetter also posted a photo-montage of Merkel displaying a Star of David. Expressing pro-Nazi sentiments is illegal in Austria.

Thousands march against rightist ball in Austria

Police says a demonstration protesting a right-wing ball in Vienna ended with 20 detentions and four people slightly injured.

About 3,000 demonstrators gathered to oppose the ball being hosted at the Hofburg palace by the right-wing FPO party, which promotes xenophobia and has some neo-Nazi supporters.

Some tried to break through police barricades and a few threw paint bombs and tear gas canisters. They dispersed early Saturday.

The demonstrators said the guests include neo-Nazis and other rightist extremists from Austria and abroad.

Two demonstrators and two police officers were reported slightly hurt.
