2014 Citroen C4 Picasso - front three-quarter view

Filed under:

The 2013 Citroën C4 Picasso brings some unexpected company to the new 2014 Jeep Cherokee and its novel headlight arrangement. And since two such designs are rarely an accident in vehicle design, we’ll say this could be a trend. More traditionally, the C4 Picasso brings smaller dimensions outside, more space inside, lighter weight and more technology to Europe‘s small people-mover game.

Built on PSA-Peugeot/Citroën’s Efficient Modular Platform 2, it’s lost 140 kilograms (308 pounds) so it weighs as much – or as little – as the Citroën C3 Picasso and its new design has an air drag index that’s better than the Audi R8 and Ford GT. The wheelbase is stretched, the front overhang is reduced by 70 millimeters, and the lower position of the engine and floor drop the center of gravity and the wider track makes for a more aggressive stance and delivers better handling.

Inside, the do-it-all center stack is topped by a 12-inch high-definition screen augmented by a seven-inch touchscreen. The dividers in the two-tone instrument panel are black on the driver’s side and Champagne or Ardoise on the passenger side. The info display on the larger screen is reconfigurable, while the smaller, seven-inch screen controls functions like the air conditioning, navigation and Multicity Connect apps. The first row of seats is patterned to look like a one-piece bench, the second row can move fore and aft, standard trunk space is a around 19 cubic feet and the tailgate made of composites opens and closes electronically. Airiness is ensured by the panoramic windscreen and glass roof.

Among its engines are the brand’s first BlueHDi diesel engines to meet Euro 6 standards. They can be paired with a six-speed manual, a six-speed clutchless gearbox and, coming in early 2014, a six-speed automatic. Safety and convenience comes with surround cameras in a package called 360 Vision*, Park Assist, adaptive cruise control, active seatbelts, automatic high beam, blind spot monitoring and lane departure warning systems.

It will go on sale in France in June of this year. For more on this funky four-wheeled Technospace, check out the press release and video below for more details.

Citroën Shows Off Updated C3 Hatchback, C4 Picasso–Previewing Technospace Concept [2013 Geneva Auto Show]

By Alexander Stoklosa

Citroën C3

Next to its bizarrely cool Hybrid Air concept, Citroën has announced it will debut a refreshed C3 hatchback and a new concept previewing the next-generation C4 Picasso at the 2013 Geneva auto show. For those who are unfamiliar with French cars, allow us to translate that last bit for you. The C3 is a subcompact, tallish five-door people mover, and the C4 Picasso is a larger, tallish five-door people mover.

C3 Hatchback

The C3 has traditionally brought an extra dose of flair and style to the tiny hatchback market overseas, and the latest iteration is no different. In Geneva, Citroën will show off a mildly updated C3 with fresh front styling and new taillights. It looks as though in its quest to keep up with the bleeding edge of lighting tech, the automaker also slapped some LEDs onto the C3′s front end, as well. The freshened C3 goes on sale this spring.

Technospace Concept

Citroën’s Technospace concept holds true to its name with a spacious and open-feeling interior that conveys a “loft spirit” and “pared-down atmosphere.” Yeah. To us, the Technospace appears to benefit from clever packaging as well as Citroën’s unique “Zenith” windshield design, which extends the top of the windshield well into the roof for a more panoramic forward view. The concept’s exterior design is handsome, and marks a clear departure from the roly-poly, upside-down-bowl look of the C4 Picasso vanlet it will replace. The new C4 is set to launch later this year.

The Continental: The Ultimate Golf VI, Plus Some Geneva Auto Show Debuts

By Jens Meiners

The Continental

Each week, our German correspondent slices and dices the latest rumblings, news, and quick-hit driving impressions from the other side of the pond. His byline may say Jens Meiners, but we simply call him . . . the Continental.

American enthusiasts, eat your hearts out: The ultimate Golf VI is here, and it won’t come to the U.S. Volkswagen has launched the Golf R Cabriolet, powered by the hardtop R’s 265-hp, turbocharged four-cylinder engine. It comes only with VW’s well-proven six-speed dual-clutch automatic. The launch of this model could strike observers as curious, since the all-new, next-generation Golf VII just arrived. But a Cabriolet based on the new Golf is a considerable distance away; at least the regular Golf VI Cabriolet previewed some VII styling elements—such as its more angular taillight contour—so it shouldn’t look like a total outlier in Volkswagen showrooms. The car looks great, is the most powerful offering in its class by far, and its performance should nearly catapult it into Boxster territory.

Mercedes-Benz CLA250 Edition One

I have criticized the compact Mercedes-Benz CLA‘s styling, but must admit the car’s look is daring and funky. Especially so is the Edition One version, which is being offered in Europe for twelve months at a hefty premium of almost €7000. The interior is contemporary and ultra-sporty, with a yellow-on-black scheme Benz is calling Neon Art. It goes well with the black-painted AMG wheels and available matte-silver paint.

Citroën Technospace

Citroën is perfecting the compact people-mover with its Technospace concept car, which previews the successor of the C4 Picasso. It is muscular, well-proportioned, and features an unusual and futuristic headlight treatment which will hopefully be carried over to the series production model. The interior is dominated by a huge, 12-inch screen.

Honda Civic wagon concept

Honda is launching the Civic wagon concept, a vehicle that also is close in execution to an upcoming series production model. The production car will be offered with a range of gasoline and diesel engines, and I think it would make a great addition to Honda’s lineup on the U.S. market—if Honda ever decided to send it here. The Civic sedan that is sold in America leaves me cold, and this year’s hastily deployed facelift hasn’t changed that.

SsangYong Rodius

One of the most curious vehicles of all time, the SsangYong Rodius, is getting a slightly less-offensively styled replacement. Called Rodius (or Stavic or Korando Turismo) it offers up to eleven seats and is powered by a 155-hp, diesel four-cylinder mated to either a six-speed manual or a Mercedes-designed five-speed automatic. Otherwise, the Rodius draws heavily from SsangYong’s outdated parts bin. So far, the company—owned by Indian carmaker Mahindra—has not claimed the Rodius’s platform is shared with the Mercedes-Benz S-class, as it did with the car’s predecessor.
