Robert Downey Jr. to Play Gepetto…and Pinocchio?

In an unusual but utterly intriguing casting rumour, Robert Downey Jr.may play both Gepetto and Pinocchio in a movie adaptation of the classic story helmed by Ben Stiller.

Warner Bros. was originally trying to unite Downey Jr. with director Tim Burton for the project, but it was subsequently revealed that those negotiations may have run afoul when the Iron Man star recently said he would like to collaborate with Stiller. “I want to make Pinocchio as a live action film,” said Downey Jr. at an Iron Man 3 junket, “and not resorting to ‘animation. I would like to do it with Ben Stiller…”

Del Toro's Pinocchio Gets Shelved

It’s off to the chopping block for Guillermo del Toro’s stop-motion Pinocchio movie, which had Daniel Radcliffe and Tom Waits in talks to join. Gris Grimly, who illustrated the original storybook on which the film would’ve been based, revealed via Twitter this week that the feature project is no longer happening.

Bleeding Cool was able to secure the tweets before they were removed earlier today. “Short to the point update on Pinocchio for those inquiring: It appears that this is not the right time for such a superior-adventurous flick,” Grimly said. He then replied to a fan, adding, “There are people like us out there. But they look at numbers. Frankenweenie was a box office failure to them.”
