Most indicted Atlanta schools educators surrender

All but one of the former Atlanta schools educators indicted last week have surrendered to authorities.

A sheriff’s spokeswoman said former D.H. Stanton Elementary School principal Willie Davenport was the only one of the 35 people named in the indictment who hadn’t reported to the Fulton County jail by midday Wednesday. Prosecutors had set a Tuesday deadline for the educators to surrender.

The indictment alleges a broad conspiracy to cheat, hide cheating or retaliate against whistleblowers in an effort to bolster student test scores. Many received bonuses for improved student performance as a result.

Former Atlanta Public Schools superintendent Beverly Hall was released just before 11 p.m. Tuesday after posting $200,000 bond.

Hall and 34 subordinates were indicted Friday in the test cheating scandal that rocked Atlanta Public Schools.

Former Atlanta schools superintendent posts bond

Former Atlanta schools superintendent Beverly Hall was released from jail after posting bond on charges associated with her alleged involvement in a standardized test cheating scandal.

Hall left the Fulton County jail just before 11 p.m. Tuesday after posting bond of $200,000. The 66-year-old didn’t speak to reporters as she arrived at the jail around 7:30 p.m. flanked by her attorneys. A grand jury had recommended a $7.5 million bond for Hall, but that was reduced after negotiations with prosecutors.

Hall and 34 subordinates were indicted Friday in the test cheating scandal that rocked Atlanta Public Schools. Fulton County District Attorney Paul Howard had set a Tuesday deadline for the educators to surrender at the jail.

All but a handful of them met the deadline to turn themselves in.
