10 Jordanian police injured at Syrian refugee camp

A Jordanian official says 10 Jordanian policemen have been injured in a riot that erupted at a Syrian refugee camp near the Jordan-Syria border.

Anmar Hmoud says the Friday afternoon riot in Zaatari camp occurred after handful of refugees tried to sneak out of the camp.

Hmoud, a government spokesman for the Syrian refugee camps in Jordan, says that when police stopped them, 100 other refugees turned up, showering the policemen with stones.

Police say tear gas was used to disperse the crowd.

Zaatari is home to 150,000 refugees. An additional 350,000 Syrians have found shelter in local communities.

Conditions in overcrowded, wind-swept desert camp have deteriorated since it opened last July, and there have been several previous incidents of rioting.

Jordan: Desert patrol force to cordon refugee camp

A Jordanian official says the kingdom’s desert patrol force is putting a cordon around a sprawling desert camp that houses over 100,000 Syrian refugees.

Anmar Hmoud, a government spokesman for Syrian refugee affairs, said Wednesday that the Badia force recruited from Bedouin tribes will set up the cordon on Zaatari camp’s periphery to ensure the refugees’ safety. He did not say what specific measures they would use.

He says it will prevent unauthorized exit by refugees or entry by locals. Reports have emerged from Zaatari of often-impoverished refugees engaging in drug trafficking, prostitution and other crimes.

Hmoud said Zaatari hosts 137,595 of more than 450,000 Syrian refugees sheltering in Jordan.

Last week, UN refugee chief Antonio Guterres said his agency was working with Jordan to bolster security at the camp.

Jordan says fire at refugee camp killed Syrian man

A Jordanian official says a fire that broke out over the weekend in a refugee camp near the Syrian border killed a 40-year-old Syrian man and injured two of his children.

Anmar Hmoud, a government spokesman for Syrian refugee affairs, says the two children — aged seven and 12 years — are being treated for serious burns after their tent caught fire late Saturday at the Zaatari camp.

Hmoud told The Associated Press on Monday that police are investigating the cause of the fire.

An earlier fire at the camp burned down more than 20 tents, including some hosting small shops. That blaze, which broke out on Friday, was blamed on gas cylinders used for cooking.

Jordan says it hosts more than 425,000 Syrian refugees.

Syrian refugees riot in Jordan camp; 3 hurt

A Jordanian official says a nighttime riot at a Syrian refugee camp close to the Jordan-Syria border has left two Syrian refugees and a Jordanian policeman hurt.

Anmar Hmoud, says the rioting in Zaatari camp started late Sunday and stretched into the early hours of Monday. He says it was sparked by false rumors that Jordanian policemen had sexually harassed three female refugees.

Hmoud says about 300 angry Syrian refugees attacked a police post at the camp’s entrance, prompting policemen to fire tear gas at the crowd.

He says two Syrian refugee men suffered smoke inhalation and a Jordanian policeman was hospitalized with a broken arm.

Jordan hosts about 400,000 Syrian refugees who fled the civil war at home. The Zaatari camp alone has nearly 80,000 Syrians living there.
