Giorgio Armani Privé Fall 2013

By Justin Fenner

Nude was the color of the day at Giorgio Armani‘s Fall 2013 Privé collection, presented in Paris Tuesday. The designer’s Couture wares centered on either flesh-toned fabrics or materials so sheer and light the models’ skin showed straight through them, with hints of black sprinkled throughout. There was a definite feeling of Old Hollywood to this collection, with strong-shouldered jackets, rich embroidery, and a number of gorgeous pieces that would look just as good on Kerry Washington as they would on Rita Hayworth.

Our full review will be posted shortly. In the meantime, please enjoy a first look at the collection.

Viktor & Rolf Sell Out (Kind Of!)

By Randy Miller

If you were even considering buying Viktor & Rolf‘s Spring 2013 Haute Couture collection, think again. After a 13-year hiatus from the high-fashion rounds, the Dutch design house has made headlines without even sending a single piece down the runway, as half the lineup has already been purchased by an anonymous art collector.

With only 20 outfits set to walk Wednesday night, that makes prospects of getting your hands on one of the bespectacled duo’s conceptual creations more of a challenge (not to mention, what are sure to be astronomical price tags).

Better get your credit card out if you hope to beat loyal fans like Jessica Chastain and Brit Marling to the buy!

This Is What Karl Lagerfeld Looks Like as a Miniature Figurine

By Justin Fenner

Was there life before Karl Lagerfeld and his cat Choupette became an adorable plastic figurine? Just such a product will become available on July 5 when Net-a-Porter launches a capsule collection Lagerfeld created with Italian lifestyle brand, tokidoki, which often builds product lines around the cult characters it creates.

Lagerfeld, a character in his own right with a legion of adoring fans across the globe, is sure to inspire just as many smiles and sales as the rest of tokidoki’s offering.

In addition to three doll versions of the designer that stand just over 10 inches tall, the limited-edition collection also includes a scarf, jeans, and t-shirts all decorated with a Lagerfeld-inspired cartoon print. A look at some of the products here in the gallery.

Kate Mara Gets Intimate with Elle

By Randy Miller

Kate Mara is sitting down, standing up, and sprawling out with Elle. In a July issue shoot, just released this morning, the House of Cards star opens up about career and family – namely the other Mara, Rooney.

When asked what it’s like to be the older sister of an Oscar nominee, she answers, “People want it to be much more complicated than it is. Family is family, a career is a career.” She adds, “We’re both more concerned with beating ourselves up than competing with each other.” Scroll down to see more photos and read more quotes from the feature.

  • “I admired how she managed to make ambition attractive. She just has a very winning way and great charm in the way that she couches her ambitions,” describes Kate’s House of Cards director, David Fincher.
  • Kevin Spacey‘s a fan! “I find she’s a formidable actress of immense power-and brilliantly funny,” he says.
  • “We both plan on acting for a really long time,” Kate tells Elle of her career and Rooney’s.
  • “There is a real effort to give the women in this show something substantial,” explains Spacey. “They’re not window dressing”
  • “When I described the character, Rooney laughed and told me, ‘You’re going to end up casting my sister,'” Fincher recounts.

Fear and a Psychic Convinced Alexander Wang to Take the Balenciaga Job

By Justin Fenner

The work Alexander Wang has done in his first six months at the helm of Balenciaga has been so well received, it’s hard to believe he didn’t want the job in the first place. But in an interview with Vogue‘s Mark Holgate, Wang said it took some near-divine intervention to get him to sign on the dotted line.

“My first reaction to [Kering CEO Francois Henri-Pinault] was no,” Wang said. “I told him that I was so preoccupied with what I am doing with my own brand in New York, and . . . I’ll be the most hated man in fashion!”

For guidance, Wang sought the help of a psychic who told him taking the job – and replacing the house’s beloved former creative director Nicolas Ghesquiere – was his fate. But eventually, Wang came to the conclusion that he wanted the job on his own.

“I felt that fear was driving my decision-making,” he said. “So I wrote down a list of pros and cons and asked myself, ‘What am I afraid of? The perception of failure? The perception of what people might think?’ I knew that what I wanted completely outweighed all of that.”

Chanel Haute Couture Fall 2013

By Melissa Liebling-Goldberg

If you are looking for bright color at Chanel Haute Couture Fall 2013, keep moving on. Echoing the dustiness of the antique theatre set erected in the middle of the iconic Grand Palais, Karl Lagerfeld kept his palette at a hushed tone today with pale seafoam, blushy beiges, and deep raspberry playing off a majority of black, white and grey looks. The silhouette was either long and lean in drop-waist gowns destined for the world’s most glamorous events or short and full with an almost tutu-like effect. Was Jourdan Dunn Fired For Her Curves?

By Randy Miller

Don’t cross Jourdan Dunn! When the runway model was allegedly cut from today’s Paris Haute Couture Fashion Week Dior show, she took to Twitter.

In a series of tweets, the British beauty announced the slight to her followers: “Ahahahahahaha I just for cancelled from Dior because of my boobs!” Later she added: “I’m normally told I’m cancelled because I’m ‘coloured’ so being cancelled because off my boobs is a minor.”

Now that she’s gotten us thinking, we can’t help but wonder which of the collection’s stunning designs she would have worked on the runway.

Giambattista Valli Haute Couture Fall 2013

By Justin Fenner

You can’t say Giambattista Valli doesn’t like flowers. For his Fall 2013 Couture collection, presented in Paris on Monday, Valli sent out an array of beautifully constructed dresses adorned with a variety of floral appliques. From the swirls of blue blooms that adorned a gray tulle skirt to the mum-like fuchsia flowers that spilled over the shoulder of a white gown, Valli treated this collection like his own private garden.

September Issues: Which Stars Will Shine on This Year's Most Important Covers?

By Justin Fenner

We’re only a few weeks into Summer, but the stars who will appear on the fashion world’s biggest covers in September have long since been selected and photographed. And by and large, our favorite magazines aren’t taking any chances with the most important issue of the year.

Case in point: according to WWD, most of the biggest books in the business have chosen women who’ve shown their mettle on the newsstand. Jennifer Lawrence, who’s appeared on the covers of Elle, Vanity Fair, British Vogue, and W in the past year, will cover Vogue‘s September issue. Meanwhile, Kate Upton – who has been featured on two Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Issue covers and the June cover of Vogue – will make an appearance on the September cover of Elle.

Find out who else made it onto a September cover, here. …read more

Dolce & Gabbana's Theatrical Fall 2013 Campaign

By Robert Khederian

The Dolce & Gabbana Fall 2013 campaign stands out from the other Fall ads – it reads more like a piece of Italian film rather than an artistic display of the brand’s latest collection. Upon further inspection, though, the world that Domenico Dolce lensed reflects the theatrical drama that characterizes Dolce & Gabbana’s Fall line.

Bianca Balti, Monica Bellucci, Katie King, and Andreea Diaconu all star in these captured moments, which set the highly elaborate lace gowns, decadently embellished religious mosaic dresses, and chic tweed pieces against the histrionic reactions of the ambient characters to highlight Dolce & Gabbana’s bold designs.

Women cry out, and men dressed as priests wildly gesticulate in picturesque cloisters. Others stare knowingly at the camera, conveying something almost sinister that everybody else appears to be unaware of. If anything’s certain, it’s that Dolce has succeeded in creating a campaign that is near impossible to look away from.

A New Take on the It Bag: The Fendi Be Baguette

By Robert Khederian

There’s little doubt that the Fendi Baguette was one of the first accessories to be labeled an It bag. Now, just after Fendi celebrated the bag’s 15th anniversary, the brand has reinvented it for Fall with the Be Baguette.

Improving upon a classic – especially one as widely celebrated as the Baguette – is no easy feat, but the new iteration looked to the growing popularity of crossbody bags to inspire its long chain strap. Even more exciting is the array of colors and materials that’s on offer, including a bright orange shearling, a deep eggplant leather, and an ultraluxe option in black crocodile.

With prices ranging from $1,350 for the mini to $20,000 for the aforementioned crocodile number, the prices are anything but cheap, but if you’re looking to invest in a new piece of arm candy this Fall, the Be Baguette might just be it. Look for the bags in stores and online, but until then, get a good look at the latest bag from Fendi.

Nicole Kidman Is "Strong, Sexy, and in Control" in Jimmy Choo's Fall 2013 Campaign

By Justin Fenner

Alfred Hitchcock’s heroines have inspired countless collections and campaigns, and Jimmy Choo‘s Fall 2013 ads – in which Nicole Kidman plays a stunning femme fatale – is no exception.

The campaign, which joined a spate of Fall 2013 advertising images on Monday, was shot by Mikael Jansson. For both the video and still shots, Jansson asked Kidman to portray a strong, seductive, and solitary figure who viewers catch in a series of private moments. Whether stepping out of her car or simply reclining on a couch at home, Kidman’s character is arresting – and so is the array of shoes and accessories she wears throughout the campaign.

“I really enjoyed being able to play a role that was strong, sexy, and in control,” Kidman said. “I got into a relationship with the photographer, and Mikael is very intuitive; he knows what I am thinking and feeling and is able to translate it through the camera.”

A look at all of the shots from the campaign, here. …read more

Sister Act: Penélope and Mónica Cruz Design a Bag For Loewe

By Justin Fenner

Penélope Cruz isn’t just the star of Loewe‘s Fall 2013 campaign – she’s also the co-designer of its newest handbag.

The actress and her sister Mónica worked with Loewe’s outgoing creative director Stuart Vevers on a crossbody bag that has exterior pockets. Penélope told WWD that the bag’s utility and style were created for women on the go.

“We wanted to do something special but also practical, and we wanted the design to have an unmistakable Spanish element,” she said.

The bag, which will make its retail debut on Nov. 1, is part of what the company is calling the Cruz collection and will eventually be joined by coin purses and zippered wallets. For Vevers, who will replace Reed Krakoff as the creative director of Coach in a year’s time, this collaboration is just one of a number of special projects he’s worked on for the brand. Just last month, he unveiled a series of products created with Comme des Garcons.
