Protein surfaces defects act as drug targets

New research shows a physical characterisation of the interface of the body’s proteins with water. Identifying the locations where it is easiest to remove water from the interface of target proteins could constitute a novel drug design strategy. The candidate drugs would need to be engineered to bind at the site of the protein where interfacial water is most easily dislodged. These findings, based on the work of María Belén Sierra from the National University of the South, in Bahia Blanca, Argentina and colleagues, were recently published in EPJ E. …read more

Researchers developed world's first water treatment techniques using apple and tomato peels

One of the most crucial problems affecting the world today is the scarcity of potable water. In a bid to make clean water available at low cost, Mr Ramakrishna Mallampati, a PhD candidate at the National University of Singapore (NUS), experimented with water treatment techniques using materials that are easily available, and came up with novel ways to purify water using the peels of apples and tomatoes. This is the first time that the peels of the two fruits have been used to remove different types of pollutants in water. …read more

Honduran money-laundering prosecutor killed

Honduras‘ top anti-money-laundering prosecutor has been shot to death, a prosecution spokesman said Friday.

Spokesman Carlos Vallecillo says prosecutor Orlan Arturo Chavez was killed in his truck as he returned from the National University, where he also taught.

Vallecillo said the killing was carried out in a manner now depressingly familiar in Honduras, which has one of the world’s highest homicide rates: Two gunmen riding a motorcycle pulled up beside Chavez’s truck and shot him through the window.

Chavez’s brother, Miguel Angel, said Chavez had received death threats in telephone calls.

Chavez, 52, was the third top prosecutor killed in Honduras since 2009.

Assistant Attorney General Roy Urtecho told the HRN radio station that the majority of Honduran judges and prosecutors don’t have security details.

“It is time for us to recognize we need to invest in security measures for justice system personnel,” he said.

Honduran prosecutors are under fire on several fronts.

On Tuesday, congress voted to suspend Utrecho and Attorney General Luis Rubi and appoint an oversight committee to shake up the country’s notoriously deficient law enforcement.

With a homicide rate of 91 per 100,000 residents, Honduras is often called the most violent country in the world. Prosecutors solve only about 20 percent of homicide cases.

Bioengineers develop world's first microfluidic device for rapid separation and detection of non-spherical bioparticles

A bioengineering research team from the National University of Singapore (NUS) team led by Associate Professor Zhang Yong has developed a novel microfluidic device for efficient, rapid separation and detection of non-spherical bioparticles. Microfluidic devices deal with the behavior, precise control and manipulation of fluids that are geometrically constrained to sub-millimeter scale. This new device, which separates and detects non-spherical bioparticles such as pathogenic bacteria and malaria infected red blood cells, can potentially be used for rapid medical diagnostics and treatment.

More Than 200 Million Women Will Need Contraception By 2015

By The Huffington Post News Editors

The percentage of married women or women in couples who use at least one contraceptive method has grown over the past two decades, from 55 percent in 1990 to 63 percent in 2010. But new projections suggest that the demand for modern contraception remains high: By 2015, 233 million women worldwide will have an unmet need for contraception, according to a United Nations study published Monday.

“The gains in contraceptive prevalence and the reduction in unmet need for family planning since 1990 are indeed significant,” study author Dr. Ann Biddlecom, chief of the fertility and family planning section at the U.N. Population Division, told The Huffington Post. “But some parts of the world are still coping with high unmet need for family planning.”

From 1990 to 2010, the unmet need for family planning — or the percent of women who wish to postpone having a baby or avoid it altogether but who were not using any method of contraception — dropped from 15 to 12 percent. The results of the contraception study — based on numbers from available U.N. data on married or in-union women age 15 to 49, as well as mathematical modeling — were published Monday in The Lancet. The study was conducted by researchers with the U.N. and the National University of Singapore.

Graphene researchers create 'superheated' water that can corrode diamonds

A team of researchers from the National University of Singapore (NUS) led by Professor Loh Kian Ping, Head of the Department of Chemistry at the NUS Faculty of Science, has successfully altered the properties of water, making it corrosive enough to etch diamonds. This was achieved by attaching a layer of graphene on diamond and heated to high temperatures. Water molecules trapped between them become highly corrosive, as opposed to normal water. …read more
